Im using sand in my 56g, and i realy like the look so i want to keep it when start planting, after reading several post everyone seems to agree its not a problem with the proper ferts/ root tabs, but what i havent seen is a recommened depth, i only have about 3/4 inch in there now, as i always wanted to avoid the gas build up ive heard about with sand. So how deep should i have the same for planting, im planning some amazon swords, and then mostly small stuff. also is the gas build up a common problem when you have plants in sand?

havent completely decided on the smaller stuff, my idea right now is a large sword and some chunks of driftwood as focal point, and then some smaller stuff making a carpet around if, probably some dwarf sag and maybe some smaller 4-5" stuff.

looks like i have quite a bit more sand to pick up.
