So this is a journal I thought I'd make of the emersed growth of S repens (and some other carpeting plant, forgot the name).
Hope you enjoy :)
I will update this weekly. Also here's the steps I took to do this.

So I got a regular, rectangular plastic container

Then in the container, put some regular backyard topsoil dirt (Sifted by hand) and put it into the container

After that, filled it with water (room temp) and sprinkled some Black Cow in it, should help a bit...

Got some spare plastic, placed it on top of it nice and tight and taped it down to the side of the plastic cup :flick:

And here's a picture of the finished product, facing inside the cup. You can kind of see the tape but you get the point lol

Sorry I couldn't update on week 4, school schedual has been fluxuating from here to there constantly!

Week 5
Trimmed the ludwigia rubin, trimmed clover, trimmed japan, and got a new box for all the plants. sorry I couldn't take any pics!
Cool project. I'm currently infatuated with s. repens. I am surprised it has not been growing faster in these circumstances. I know it's not the fastest growing plant but I've been having tremendous success with it submerged in a non co2 tank!...though growth rate has severely dropped since I took some fish out, the tank was overstocked so it probably had plenty of co2. Any thoughts or do you think it's growing as fast as it should?

I was just thinking to do an update! :) great minds think alike huh? Sorry I haven't been giving the weekly updates, busyness of greenhouse building and house building takes my time quick...

So I re-did the growing box again, just filled it with (in this order) Sand, Black Cow, Good ol' Dirt.

All the plants but the S repens have been needing just about weekly trimming... S repens hasn't done anything! in my tank and emersed, I think I got a bad batch.... I have had them for about 3-4 months now and nothing... sorry pic is sideways

Here's a current picture, everything (except s repens. of course) is thriving and growing, and I think its only been about a week or 2 since I added these plants into the bucket!

Well my s. repens grows incredibly slow with or without Co2, also sorry I didn't answer this sooner, I didn't see it! :( But if what your saying is accurate, your s repens is prob. growing faster than mine lol!

Might be moving this out to the greenhouse soon!
Unfortunate the s repens isn't doing the best! I definitely would have thought that you would have a semi decent carpet by now, more than a month later. Everything looks great though!

Well as I said before, so much for weekly updates lol

Heres the Box now, I cut that hydrocotle literally in half! put it in a separate container! Thing grows like a weed I swear, its going into the greenhouse soon. Also the greenhouse just got done being built (courtesy of me myself :) ) mid last month! It was supposed to be under a "budget" but 30$ a sheet for that plastic. Well so much for the budget! Plus the gravel, raspberry bushes, mulch, etc. Sorry I didn't share it sooner, you know how it goes...

Nice - what is the growing season like?
With my actual garden if that's what mean, I have Swiss chard starting in the greenhouse, along with some Gem corn (to early but I couldn't wait, they came out pretty last year), broccoli, cauliflower, and cabbage.
Ah well I guess I mean both - what is your growing season (outside) like? What is your growing season (in the greenhouse) like? I've thought the greenhouse approach is neat - I've been wondering about whether it lives up to expectation.

I think if you are germinating seeds, do it in the greenhouse, then move them out. I think it would get to hot in that particular greenhouse (120 degrees in there at one point, buying a SP fan) for mature plants like lettuce for example..

Got some updates for you guys...
Greenhouse plants are doing so/so im having good growth but a MAJOR problem, the ludwigia wont grow straight up because theres to much light and its very hot, how do I get them to grow straight up? right now they are carpeting so to speak.

Moved the big box (on the right) inside for today, experiment but now I am going to move it back out to the greenhouse tmrw. Just because its taking 2 much space.

S. Repens is spreading, but no height... WHY YOU NO HEIGHT!?!?!?

Emersed Hydrocotle japan & Pearlweed look pretty good. Hydrocotle is starting to die off in this particular setup so I may move it or something. or let it stay idk.
The pearlweed grows faster when it is submerged IMO, this has taken a while... 2 hours air a day for my setups.

An up close image of pearlweed, emersed leaves are 2x smaller to me. Look nice but, not as good as HC or DBT when emersed...

And idk if you can see inside but heres a pic of the ludwigia bending over, some tall growth but that's only because I just put some stems in I had extra. Also ill be selling some soon if anyone wants some :p soon as in within this month or half way through next month hopefully. I toss so many extra plants out its unbelievable. a waste. I always have extra vallisneria italia, ludwigia, bacopa, hydrocotle, pearlweed, etc you name it! I have extra stuff, but like I said im not up for sale yet. working on it! gotta do some bank work first before I start to sell. (no this is not an AD... read at own risk lol)

Hey, a greenhouse is a greenhouse am I right? nice garden btw :) My GH was a DIY, turned out expensive since it was 20$ a sheet for the plastic. Total was over 200$ but we had the carport when we bought the property about half a year ago or so.
In the greenhouse there's a table on the right side (if your looking through the door) and an aquaponics system on the left, ill show you all a pic when it is setup. Right now we are just waiting for it to cycle and we are done. I put a sponge filter in it with a 576GPH pump from AlliedAqua.com (good site to buy from btw, cheap af and high quality)
Its kinda weird cause im a pepper guy to, I only eat the bell peppers I grow but in general I always just have the urge to grow random types of pepper, jalapeno, other names idk, etc lol. btw I see you grow tomatoes ( but I guess this applies to anything ), have you ever tried growing them on a bale of hay? I think its called the hay method? all you do Is put like a handful of dirt on a regular rectangular bale of hay and sprinkle a seed into the dirt (on top of the bale) and bam it grows, you water. done. Some people swear by it but I guess ill have to try myself!

i've never heard of that method. Don't see why it wouldn't work though. Probably have to start with an older almost decaying bale of hay.

If you are interested in growing any hot peppers I got a expansive seed collection. Many aren't even on this list but i'd be happy to mail you anything you want to try.

Or if you're unsure just let me know your heat tolerance level and I can send some varieties in that range. https://www.dropbox.com/s/453c2f3opk1aalo/Pepper Seed spreadsheet excel.xls?dl=0

Well thanks very much for the offer, I may have to take you up on that sometime! :) As for the hay, I agree, would have to be already slightly decayed. that wouldn't be to much of a hassle though to get it to start decomposing. just water it for like a week or two.
