rummy nose NO EYE

5051 Views 10 Replies 8 Participants Last post by  accordztech
I was just looking at my fish, and one of my rummy nose tetras is missing an eye :icon_eek:. The other side is fine, all red. But on the other side his eye is completley gone, he is nice and red just like the other guys and is swimming in a school like everyone else.

I have 3 loaches, 10 cories, 3 nerite snails, 3 algae eating sharks. None of which I can see taking a chunk out of his eye.

IS there any disease for this? Or is it ok...

Thanks

Is this a new addition to your tank? I have almost 30 Cardinal Tetras (and 9 Rummynose) in a tank and 2 of my Cardinals are missing eyes. They don't show any sign of stress and act totally normal. It's very possible for a fish to be missing an eye and be fine. If it seems to be acting normally I wouldn't worry about it...
I had a platy that didn't have an eye. If this is a new fish, I wouldn't worry about it.
I had a goldifhs that was born without an eye, great friend. I got him for free at Petsmart.
if it looks like wound just jeep that water in pristine collection. I had a tiger barb that had a wound and lost and eye, it recovered to live a very long life :)
It could have just poked itself on something and it healed or another fish just got in a lucky shot. I got a chinese algae eater from a friend and it sucked the eye right out of the socket of one of my black moors so I gave it an ice water bath as revenge.
I found a toad once that was missing half of its head and it was fine. I also caught a bass that didn't have an upper jaw. Its face just stopped in front of its eyes.
I will watch him for a few days. I had these guys at least 2 months now. I think he was the last batch I purchased. I didnt notice it until I started starring at my snails, then saw him looking weird.

Thanks for the advice!
Are your "algae eating sharks" chinese algae eaters? If so, they're a prime culprit.

Loaches also have "knives" they can slide out of the side of their heads that are capable of doing damage to fish- especially if they're very competitive during feeding.

My sharks aren't the chineese ones. I made sure of that. They have a much smaller mouth but Tess are the guys who love to eat NBA

As for the loaches they usually stay away and they rarely come up to eat the food of the tetras.
Now my rummy has no eyes. You can see right through it. He is getting skinnier than the other fish. Today I tried feeding it. Usually if I tap the cannopy all the fish come up for food, but it seems like this guy cant hear me any more. He wont eat any food he wont see. So I try to get him in a small spot in bushes and just use a turkey baster and put food very close to him. He can find it and eat it. Poor guy
