RPG games for PC - a rare bird

I don't game a lot, but occasionally I do like to drag out the ol' Dungeon Siege and go whack some monsters. I would LIKE to try something new but it seems like everything I see is either for xBox or its ilk or some MMORPG thing which I want nothing to do with. I wasn't even that fond of DS II because the multiplayer (which hubby and I like to play over the LAN) stuck to the same durn storyline which in my opinion wasn't that overwhelming to begin with. The only other game I play with any regularity is Age of Empires, but again, I stopped at AOE, Age of Kings, because I wasn't interested in playing the American wars. I'd rather be a Viking or Celt any day :). I tried the Civilization series, but could never get into it. Is there ANYthing similar to Dungeon Siege but a bit newer that I can get in PC format? I am not interested in first person shooters. There's a limit to how much hacking and slashing I want to do.

Go counterstrike, You'll get hooked, after getting killed a couple of times
!! or Gunbound
Take a look at NWN and see if it may interest you.

I personally have always been FPS, I started in 96 with the original Unreal and never looked back.

However I did play all the AoE series too, my mom loved that game so I played with her and let her win some ;)
Welp, frozenbarb, one of those is a first person shooter, and the other is an online game. So, thanks for the suggestions but they're not my cup of tea. Fantasy, D&D type, or historical before 1500 A.D. is more what I'm interested in I guess. That's the prob, it's a very narrow category.
If you are willing to go old school, Baldur's Gate 2 with the expansion is the best RPG ever made IMO.

Anything made by Bioware is worth playing.
If you goto walmart, check the 9$ rack, pick up Dungeon Keeper and Dungeon Keeper 2!
Hmmm. Neverwinter Nights. Do I have that sitting around here somewhere? I think I do. May have to give it another try. I think I tried it and couldn't get into it, but I think the trouble was I wasn't willing to give it the time to learn the game. I've played DS so much I'm kinda stuck in DS mode :hihi: and it takes a real effort to switch to something else. Lineage II looks like it's another MMORPG, unless there's something I'm missing.

There was an ad for Bioware's The Witcher, and I just watched the trailer which is awesome eye-candy, but really didn't say if it's online or available standalone? Does anyone happen to know?

At least these have given me some new directions to try.

Yah, I think I'll pull out NN again. I really had forgotten I even had the thing.
like frozenbarb says, you may want to check out counter strike. i know it's not really what your looking for, but it is like the biggest game for tournaments and stuff. Awesome.

Also, i used to be into Runescape. It's a fun game, but i got made fun of too much for playing it and i got counterstrike :D . So, i stopped, but it may be what your looking for.
you cant go wrong with NWN. Very good game and lots of expansions. My go to game is Morrowind. I LOVE IT. So many plugins for MW it never gets old. I put in a plug in that expands how many monsters there are by like 10x.
Trust me young Skywalker, I'm at an age where I don't care a rat's tail what other folks think ;). I'll check out Runescape as well!
An older game but still a good one is Diablo II.
Yea Try diablo two, It gets addicting til couple of years maybe?
You can also check out Lineage II
I recommend AGAINST playing Lineage ][
I was a beta tester and played it on and off for years.
( I own about half a billion adena worth of accounts )

it really is little fun, and a lot of grinding, unless you are
in a well established clan/alliance, in which case you will
need to invest endless scheduled hours tying to support.

a better NCSoft game with less on going commitment would be;
Guild Wars
which does not require Monthly fees, all you do is pay
for whatever updated content you wish to play with,
and you don't have to pay for all updates to enjoy it.

you should also consider breaking your RPG mold
and try the brave new world of RTS game should
you have the new computer that can handle it;
World in Conflict

I enjoyed Dungeon Siege too, but I stopped playing
solo games, as once you start hacking it, the game
becomes pointless, and I can't resist game exploits.

Actually most the good RPG's are on the PC. not rare by any means. You have your MMORGP's and your stand alones. MMORGPS of course come with a monthly fee tho. But still there are plenty of choices.
Well, it's really only the solo games I'm interested in. The only hacking I ever did to DS was when I lost a modded character that I'd brought up to like level 80 something and he had to have some godsawful dexterity (65?) in order to carry and use the modded bow that came with him. I wasn't about to try to bring him up again so I hacked his stats. It might come easily to some people, it didn't to me, and I'm really amazed it worked to tell you the truth  .

I second Guild Wars. I played it for a year straight starting from the day it went gold. I think this might be the most user friendly RPG ever created.
Im a bit picky myself, but I HAVE played WoW since it was released, with the occasional, several month break here and there. I tried Guild Wars as a "break" from WoW, and it was cool at first, but seemed lacking in comparison.
As stated, Diablo 2 is an awsome game, especially given the time frame it was released. If you're familiar with the Diablo 2 play style and like it, another one to consider would be Titan Quest. Its (almost) the same game, but based around Greek mythology and also has a recently released expansion.
Fable: The Lost Chapters is a AWSOME game that I have played MANY times and still enjoy. (There is a plain old "Fable" but The Lost Chapters is the same game, just has more content.)
If you like Star Wars, you can always give Knights of the old Republic or its sequel, KotoR 2 The Sith Lords a try. Once again, awsome games. These two are a bit slower and a bit more RPG type (including Fable), but they offer the abilities to choose your destiny ( also like Fable). If you want to play good, bad, change up along the way, these give you that versatility.
Most of what you can find for the Xbox 360 should be available in PC format. I dont know if its all areas, or just here, but even Wal-Mart is cutting WAY back on PC games, and alot of the newer games are for Windows Vista.
Come to think of it, even the likes of EB Games and Gamestop are sparce on anything outside of console games.
If you cant find anything in your area, you can always check Ebay for some cheaply priced used games, or if you are anti-Ebay, Bestbuy typically has a good selection that is categorized. Good luck in any event :)

the eldar scrolls series are great RPGs oblivion being the newest. you do need a pretty good computer for playing them though because the graphics are crazy.
Depending on your specs, you should give Eder scrolls Oblivian a go, very good RPG.
If you want to try a MMORPG, you could try "Sword of the new World" It was pay to play, but now its free to download the game, and no monthly fee's.
Plenty to hack and slash in that game.
Theres also Archlord which is the same, free download, free to play.
Havent tried that one yet though.
