Rotala rotundifolia and glosso question

1326 Views 5 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  Wö£fëñxXx
Two completely different and unrelated questions.
Glosso. Why does glosso spread across the substrate in one tank and grows up in others? The tanks its growing up in are at least 6wpg 30ppm+ co2 fertilizers dosed accordingly. The tank it spreads in 2wpg no co2 and only trace elements.
Is some glosso different than others?

Rotala rotundifolia.
I got a bunch of Rotala rotundifolia from e-bay. I have been growing and trimming and replanting what I thought was Rotala indica for months. When I got the Rotala rotundifolia the leaves were round now the new growth of these plants looks exactly like the Rotala indica. Does this make sense to anyone?

Rotala rotundifolia.

The Rotala rotundifolia you bought was grown emersed. When grown submersed, its leaves do not stay round. Hope this helps.
Also, sometimes, the names of rotala rotundifolia and rotala indica has been used interchangably, though it is wrong, to my knowledge.

No, it is no different.
What is happening in the highlight tank is you are not injecting enough C02 for the amount of light you are burning, therefore the Glosso will grow more so-upward and ratty looking.
You will need to either find a better way to inject C02 more efficiently with good flow or reduce the lighting, I recommend the later, mow/trim the Glosso, reduce the light some, raise it higher or cut some bulb/s while maintaining a positive amount of gas with good flow, then it will flatten out and grow right.

Rotundifolia has round leaves in its emersed form.
There has been some confusion over the name of that plant for some time.
You did get the point that the glosso is spreading in a tank with out any co2 right?
My other two tanks have medium to high water flow and 30ppm+ co2. I will try cutting the light.
Yes I got the point, but that is another tank.
When light level reaches a certain point, then C02 is a must along with nutrients, the light is what drives the plants metabolism in hyper mode, the margin for error becomes much greater in that area, if any nutrient including C02 is in short supply weird things begin to happen.

I have tested this and found that the cause for glosso to grow upward is a short supply of C02, but not short enough to cause BBA, a little more tweaking is needed with C02-better diffusion by either re-arranging pipe/spray bar. add another needle valve for another diffuser/reactor-better flow- and or reduce lighting.
You just have to find that sweet spot based on hardware used, water supply and plants being grown.
But I do know that a little more C02 is needed or lighting needs to be reduced.

I want to do a thread one day not to far off on advanced growing techniques that hopefully will help further our experience with managing C02, light etc.

As far as the glosso growing OK in the low tech tank well that is a horse of a different color, you have obviously either managed to strike that balance that is needed to grow the more demanding plant/s in a low tech setup or you either simply got lucky, either way the lighting, the filtration, bio-media all play a role, whether low or high tech.

Please keep us informed on how things go with the advancement of the glosso as you tweak this and that...
