Osmocote Plus gelcaps in my big tanks with no sensitive livestock. But since you asked for other ideas…
Jobe's = magic for things like Anubias and some Crypts.
Preferred method are homemade clay tabs loaded down with dry ferts in the mix. They're pretty stable, break down slowly, easy to customize.

The empty spheres swirling across the substrate after using Osomocote drove me even more NUTZ LOL!
I have to order from overseas to get it (ordered 2 cases >year ago).
WonderGro Root+ is my favorite for inert subs.

As mentioned above, Osomocote pot shot's (do google).
No little yellow ball's everywhere unless,,you are one of those who is alway's uprooting plant's.
Shove em deep into substrate, and replace em about every four month's.
Had been using jobes plant spikes for fern's but sudden die off of cherry shrimp's which had been thriving before inserting the spike's,,left me searching for other option's.
