how much if any effect does the ambient light in the room have on your tank, as far as algae is concerned?
Does reducing your photo period help if the light in the room is on a lot?

192 Watts per gallon is WAY too much light.

In any case, room light doesn't have much effect. It's the light over the tank that drives plants and algae.
Something tells me that he made a typo. I doubt he has over 8,600 watts of lighting on a 45 gallon tank. I'd bet it's either 192 watts total for ~4.3w/g, or 1.92watts/gallon.

I'm not an algae expert but its the brownish/black stuff on the leaves and the bright green on the logs and glass. I clean the glass every other day.
And every day I see like some white residue on the glass, is that algae? What kind?
