I had a question regarding general lighting. I have my tank placed in the family room, and since I live in a townhouse, the dining room and kitchen are close to it as well. I'm trying to get a low tech tank going and obviously I have a light for my tank but was wondering if the lights in the family room/dining room will affect the plants at all, positively or negatively. In my mind, I think it would help somewhat but I could be wrong. Thanks

Light from room lamps usually doesn't have any noticeable effect on the tank (unless some lamp is really close, like on the same table). However, if you have windows close to the tank and natural sun light hits aquarium for significant amount of time then this can make your life more difficult (e.g. cause algae issues, make plants grow towards the direction of the window etc.).
