Rocks

I am trying to get some rocks for a new set up I am putting together. I went to our local landscaping shop and a nursery. I found some rock I liked here is what they are called
Quartz Rock - redish grey
Yukon Gold - looks like a quartz
Quartz Rock, white, yellow or green

How can I test to make sure that any of these are suitable, they range anything from 15 to 35 cents a pound, alot cheaper than the rock at the LFS. Right now I am soaking the small samples in vingar to see if the foam or react with any limestone that might be in them. Any suggestions or comments would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for now Al.

If you drip hydrochloric acid on it and it fizzes, its bad, but if it doesn't fizz, its good. (generally speaking)

You can get the acid at lowes or Home depot for less then $10 for a gallon. Its nasty stuff though so be careful and read the label ;)

(sometimes its sold as muriatic acid)
Thanks - I think i have some in my shop. Thanks for the quick response.

I guess I should mention that just because it fizzes, it isn't necessarily bad. What I should have said is if it fizzes, it will alter the water chemistry (hardness and possibly the PH)

I use 'Fizz' rocks in my hard-water/brackish tanks for my inverts and gobbies.

I am setting up a 65 gallon tank, with angels tetra, cories, pleco, rams, just a standard planted hi tech.

Yeah you will probably not want to use 'Fizz' rocks :) They will harden up your water and make keeping any Ram fry you get, hard to keep alive.

From what I understand, most Volcanic rock doesn't fizz.
Thanks for your help EntoCraig
