Well, knowing me.. i have to have all sorts of tanks, i have a south american cichlid tank (mostly for the kid), nano reed (work in progress), fahaka tank, and now a planted..

I recentely found info on a riparium setup, and not that im going to set one up any time too soon. But I got a question.

I notice most of these tanks have driftwood sticking half way out the water (give or take). Now, I used to have a red ear slider tank (R.I.P buddy guy), and I briefly had a piece of driftwood in there sticking out of the water so he could get to and from his basking spot.

I had a HUGE problem with the wood that was sticking out of the water grow mold and some other nasty stuff on it that ultimately stunk up the kitchen and caused nothing but problems.

Any idea why?
is there something about a riparium planted setup that would prevent this?
or is it maybe just the kind of wood that I had used?

Not sure if this is related to your old wood, but::

- What type of wood?
- Is it dead?
- Dead as in freshly cut (within a year's time) or dead-dead (dried out dead)?
