A paludarium has real, above-the-waterline land portions.

A riparium has submersed baskets that plants grow out of.

Riparium would represent transitional/marginal zone of a RIVER or a STREAM. While a paludarium would be representative of a paludal habitat, i.e. a swamp or marsh. Alternatively, a lacustrine habitat ( so, lacustarium??) would be that of marginal zones of lakes or ponds.

YW. To clarify, in terms of bioactive vivs, a pal, would have water with emergent plants (roots, crown, and maybe some leaves underwater) with a distanct landmass. Alternatively, a riparium would focus largely on emmersed (again, submerged roots, crown, and also emergent groeth) plants, either grown in a basket/ hager/container or rooted in the substrate - the key difference there is NO land feature. Again, the real deliniation is the type of habita/ecosystem being represented moreso than a type of vivarium.
