A few years back I sold my reef tanks to a young man in the Airforce. He had a reversable pump. It was a very small electric pump. He pumped the saltwater out of the tanks, up a flight of stairs and into holding tanks in the back of a van.
I thought it was about the coolest thing ever. At 50 years of age, I am still capable of hauling my 5 gallon buckets to do water changes, but it is getting to be less and less fun.

I have looked but never found what I saw that day.

You could acheive the same thing with a y-pipe and shut off valve.

There are several brands of power-head that allow you to do this. Marineland and AquaClear I am pretty sure offer this feature, you just have to add enough hose to make it feasible.

Some, not all, DC electric pumps will run backwards.
Being in the Air Force, his was probably a stainless steel fuel something or other.
