restarting my 40 cube

I am ready to rebuild my cube! This time around I want to build up one corner (right rear) very high and have it slope down to the remaining three corners. What are some of my options to build up dead space 17 inches high. That much substrate can't be good?

you can use rocks underneath the gravel/sand, egg crate works well, i've even heard of using tupperware(sans lid)
