Replacing substrate

I'm looking into replacing my eco-complete with something similar to Ada Amazonia. I want to replace the substrate in sections without having to take all of the fish out... While Ada Amazonia is a great product, I really want something cheaper and something that isn't going to give me the ammonia release issues. Any suggestions?

Having used both eco-complete and ADA Amazonia I don't think it's going to be possible to use a product like ADA Amazonia with out doiing a complete teardown and setting up the tank again. Your just going to need to deal with the ammonia spike. Also, I found ADA Amozonia threw a lot of dirt into the water. That settled out in time, butthe tank sure looked bad for awhile.

More to the point, what are your reasons for wanting to do this type of replacement? Also, how large a tank are we talking about?

Perhaps there is a better way to correct things without a substrata replacement.

DaveK is correct. You can't simply ADA Amazonia to the tank which it will leach out a lot of ammonina in the water might kill your fish. You can do this with inert substrate like pool filter sand or blasting sand.

I know all about the ammonina issues which is why I'm asking if there is a cheaper product out there that I could use that won't leach out ammonina.

Bump:

I really don't have the ability to do a complete teardown without going out and buying a holding tank, which I guess I could do... To answer your question, I would like to add some cory to my tank but the rough surface of the eco-complete is not ideal for them. I have a 65 gal tank.

Thanks for your help!
