So I have an dual T8 strip that I don't want to upgrade for various reasons, and a lamp went out. Bought new lamp, and it didn't work. Realized one of the ballasts was dead, and went looking for replacement. No joy at the hardware stores in town, so bought online. Fiddled with wires and screws today ... and now I have my whopping 34 watts back in action on my 29gal.

Low light, low tech, DIY success. Sweet tanks are made of these.

Sounds like you did it all right. Looking at replacing the cheap parts before looking at the big items is always good planning. Just being willing to get in and try it earns a big gold star from me!
Of course that gold star won't even get you a cup of coffee any more.
