What's the best way of removing an Amazon Sword? I know they are deep rooters and spread wide under the substrate.

I'd like to remove one in my tank that has been established since starting the tank earlier this year. I don't want to disturb the substrate much. Do I tug slowly? Can I just cut the roots and let the remaining roots decompose?

Maybe cut the roots in a circle around the plant with a knife and leave the remaining roots in place? I know those plants can REALLY put out the roots, sometimes across the whole tank.
