regulator fittings question

i have a jbj and milwaukee regulator , solenoid , bubble counter combos
i have tried adding splitters so i can run 2 needle valves and two bubble counters each
it seems the tread size is a little weird
1/4 (edit 3/8)inch doesn't seem to quite fit
are they metric
at some point i want to get a dual stage reg with good solenoids and needle valves , but want to use jbj type bubble counters
the needle valves that come with the counters have a barb on the needle valve
can i just use 1/4 inch (edit 3/8)male treads from a good needle valve and attach the jbj bubble counters to it or do ineed something else

thanks will

ok heres the problem
i can and have gotten standard pipe fittings that the jbj needle valves will fit into but its too loose. and the standard fitting too tight to thread into the jbj stuff
im not talking about the differance between a 1/4 and 3/8
thats what makes me think there metric
something ive noticed is the jbj fittings have a bigger taper so i can tread it into a standard tread easily by hand
its not till i get right to the end that it starts getting tight and i am using teflon wrap
