Welcome! You can test any rock by putting a drop or 2 of muriatic acid on it. Don't use it if it bubbles. I haven't seen this particular stone before, but normal gray slate is used all the time. I like your stone and I think it will look fantastic if you do find it will work. I'd personally try for a lighter colored substrate with that stone so it stands out a little. Just my 2 cents.

A lot of grey slate is sold advertised as ph neutral and won't alter water chemistry.. but slate is also metamorphic and can contain calcite and other minerals.. so that sounds conflicting.. following hoping someone with more geological expertise chimes in
