I've had a pair of red rilis in a small bowl, and when I put them in months ago, they were lower grade, without a ton of red, but red nonetheless. When I took them out today to move them to their new home though, I was pretty confused- they had turned blue. They're the only shrimp I've ever had do this, none of the other red in their generation, or the generation before them did this. The female is now berried and a little more yellow, but she has more pronounced stripes. The male has a red splotch on his side, and red dots on his face. Kinda cool, I guess.
This happen to anyone else?
Lighting? Food based change? I've noticed a light iridescent blue in some of my lower grade cherries.. but afaik blues came from neo. Z. Shrimps... And rili were bred from cherry? Idk, hopefully someone knows for certain
i started with all red rili shrimp a year ago and now most of mine are solid blue. red rili is where blue velvets came from so yes it does happen and you will probably get a mix of colors from them
Wicca is correct. roud: I was a little apprehensive about mentioning that- only because I honestly have no idea how prevalent the mutation of BV is! LOL
It could be something that pops up occasionally on a regular basis, and was bred into a strain, then bred for the deepest blue.
After all, stripes on the back of yellows pop up occasionally on a regular basis, and was bred into a strain called Neon.
These shrimp were blue in the bowl, now they're much better looking on a black substrate, but still blue. Pretty, wonder if I could get more blues if I crossed them with blue velvets (probably, duh)
It's really hard to take a good picture of a bowl inside a tank, when the shrimp won't stop moving. But here's the 2 low grade rili brothers in the new bowl. The momma's off hiding, but she's got the best colors
I still this it's a little odd that only the shrimp I placed in a separate bowl changed color, and then only 2/3. Maybe it was something in the water? haha
