I've started keeping an eye on craigslist for tanks in my local area (Philly) just to see if I spot any deals.

There are lots of 90 and 125 gal setups for sale (I'm really only looking for the tank and maybe a stand) and they all seem to be list at really high prices.

I went into it thinking that I should expect to see the tanks up for less than a dollar a gallon, and there are people asking $600-700 for the setup, which surprised me.

What should I consider a good deal at that tank size range?

Right of the top, I think $600-700 is way too much to spend on a used tank, even one of this size. But then again it is entirely dependant on quality and condition. I could see paying well over $700 for used if it were the "Right" tank. But for anything "average", even if it were in good-great condition, I would have a hard time paying close to that amount for a tank and stand. I could see paying in a range of $200-500 for fair to good condition.

Price the set up you are looking for new and haggle. I see posts on CL that are just ludicrous, suspect the owner is looking to completely recoup their entire investment. I generally feel used is worth at the most half of what it was new.

Looking for $1 a gallon seems a bit low to me especially if there is a stand or other equipment offered. I sold my old tank for that as it was 10 years old and the DIY stand needed work. And I think it only cost $220 new.

If you aren't in a hurry you can find some really good deals, but on average I would expect to pay closer to $2 a gallon if it has the stand and is in good condition.

My buddy payed 150 for a 180 with the stand, canopy, lights, and some nice canister filters (the guy was moving and had to get rid of it)

From what I have seen, tanks over 100 gallons usually sale from between $1/gallon and $1.50/gallon. Most people won't go under that, though you will find the occasional great deal. That isn't including all the extras, either.

I just sold a 125 with matching store bought stand (both in good condition) for $200. You have to remember, the larger the tank the more it costs. The bigger tanks go up by quite a bit, and can't ever be had new for 1$/gallon like the smaller ones. A new 125 with glass tops locally is around $300 and the store bought stand is around the same.

Try looking at CL in a military town close to you. There are always people moving and like someone stated above if their moving and have to sell they'll go cheap to just make a few bucks off of it and not have to worry about transporting it. I got my 125g for $50 because someone was in that boat. Just take your time and keep your eyes open, you'll find something.

Semper fi

There were couple times I picked up free "personal effect" from friends, and gave away everything for free before entered the theater.
No fish tank though, no pets allow in the Barracks.
There are aways occasions that people need to get rid of their big fish tank for less, or free, you just need to wait for your chance to be that lucky guy taking a big fish tank home for the cost of gas only.

I live near philly.

i traded some audio equipment for a 90 w/ stand a few months back. it needs some cleaning, but i'd be willing to give it up for $150 picked up. I'm looking at picking up a rimless 95 within the next few months and i don't think i'll be using it.

the g/f would be very happy to have that tank out of the garage ;) coincidentally, I also have a 45 w/o stand I'd be happy to move out of the house too... $20 (which hurts since it was my first tank and purchased new for around $100 lol)
