They are great community fish. I have mine with Zebra Danio, Threadfin Rainbow, Dwarf Gourami, Celestial Pearl Danio, Glowlight, Neon Tetra. They mostly bicker amongst themselves, although I have seen my Dwarf Neons chase a Zebra Danio away from her.
Neons may or may not be in danger. Might become a snack. Hard to say for sure.
neons could very well become a food source, but i think the angels would have a crack at 'em before the rainbows would
Im going to have to pick up a couple more Rainbows, these are pretty neat fish.
if they are Melanotaenia praecox, you have absolutely nothing to worry about when housing them with Neon Tetras, They are one of the smaller Rainbow species, with a very small mouth. I have mine housed with Celestial Pearl Danio's as well as a couple species of tetra, and smaller rainbows. The max they get is around 3" for the males and 2.5" for the females.

Great fish, to watch. The best viewing time is just after the lights go on. They will flare and chase the females around the tank for quite a while. Not to mention the colors become VERY vivid.

Here is a species profile for them from a site I use frequently.

They are definitely Melanotaenia praecox

Thanks a bunch
I was gonna ask something similar.

I apologize in advance for hijacking the thread, but well...

I have a 68 G tank, asian themed, i have in there:

2 Pearl Gouramies

11 Tiger Barbs

6 Gold Barbs

6 Checkered Barbs

They are all juveniles, biggest fish being the gouramies.

My question is, i would like to add rainbowfish and i really like the Boesemani ...i wanted to add 6 or so, but i don't know if the Melanotaenia Praecox would be a better choice.

Thanks!

I have a few different types of rainbows and they are all compatible with the fish you listed except for angels which I have no experience with. I've had very large bosemani rainbows and I've seen them eat another fish twice. Once when I dumped in a really small harlequinn that one of the bosemanis mistook for feeding time and spit it back out but it was too late and another time I saw a rummie in the mouth of another during feeding time so I think it must've gotten too excited and just gulped it.

My neon/cardinal populations do not dwindle unexplicably so I'm confident they do not get intentionally eaten. The rainbows just chase each other around a little and wait for feeding time.
Well thats great to hear,

One of the Rainbows passed away over night.
He was wounded when i picked him up from the store, looked like he had
some sort of sore before the tip of his tail. Well i found him tangled up in my
dwarf sag this morning.
So i scooped him out and disposed of him the best i could.

I had a gut feeling he wasnt going to make it, i did what i could.

Im going to definitely have to pick up abut 4 or 5 more rainbows.
I absolutely love the one i have left. He is All over the place!

OK, just bought 3 Boeseman's Rainbowfish. They are smallish. Around 1 1/2 inches.

I plan on buying 3 more over the course of the next weeks.

Then maybe add neon dwarf rainbowfish. This is the first time i own them. They are kinda expensive, 6 dollars a piece...then again, that's what a Harlequin costs as well and they VERY small. At least the rainbows grow a lot larger.

What size tank do you have? Bosemanis grow to 4-5 inches. I've had a couple that were 6 inches.
68 gallon. 130 cm long, 50 cm high, 40 cm in depth.
