I know they polish the water removing floating debris, algae, bacteria, etc but do they soften water? My water is at a steady 7.6 and i would love to bring it to 7.

Ok I've also read co2 lowers ph. Right after a water change mine is 7.6 so ill have to see what it is after runjing my pressurized co2 daily

I've found some for around $70 used depending if its the small one or the xl. Pm me i may be interested. What do u mean by a diatom outbreak.

As I remember diatomaceous earth is loaded with silicates, the first 6 letters should be a clue. So if the unit is not primed correctly to make mat of earth on the screen you tank could get a load of silicates, now keep in mind it's been 7 years or so since I've used it.

Mine is buried somewhere out there so you might as well look elsewhere.
