I've just bought a young bristlenose pleco and its about 2 inches long I think. When does it begin to grow its "bristles?"

Only if it's a male.

Yes Female will not show too many bristles
but the good thing when they small they are more active

My female is about 3-4" and has very very slight bristles.

Yes, I've had them too but most do not have any. Sometimes I think they may be sub-males. Don't know, but I've never had a short bristle one spawn.

Wonder if anyone out there has?
