A lot of our native northern plants require a cold rest period. Bet that's it. I've transplanted both the white and the yellow with no problems in outdoor ponds with no problem. Even my potted tropical pond lilies got a rest period in a cold basement. I'd pull the pots in the fall and plunk them back in in May.
