Problem with magnum HOT 250

1528 Views 17 Replies 8 Participants Last post by  ernluz
I have been noticing that the flow on the hot 250 goes down to almost nothing within a few hours of plugging it in. I think this has been happening for some time, but because this is a second filter on my tank I havent noticed it. At first I just figured it needed to be cleaned but it is happening so quickly that cant be the problem. I just went through and thoroughly cleaned it out and it happened again. At first the flow is very good and within a few hours it goes down to just a trickle.

Does anyone have an idea of why this is happening?

Someone posted a problem similar to this, but his only last for a few minutes before the filter stops. The filter empties out the water. His problem was a bad seated seal and was taking in air.
Are you using the pleated cartridge?
Im not sure, but it appears that I might. I googled it and it looks similar to what I am using. Is this the cause?
Yes. That is a polishing filter. It is not designed for constant running.
Which one should I purchase then?
Also, as they get older they just don't clean up as well by just rinsing them. I soak them in a bleach/water solution and it helps clean them so they'll run longer the next time. Just need to treat them with de-chlor or let it sit for a couple of days after. I keep an extra on hand. But I just use it on occasion to clear the tank if I've made a mess.

EDIT.... you can run the basket with the blue sleeve but it won't work the same (won't get the super fine stuff out).

I am going to be running it on a 20 gallon tank and it will be the only filter running on this tank. Is there a particular one you would advise picking up.
Not sure what you're asking. Are you going to use the HOT 250 on the 20g?

Ya I am going to switch it from my larger tank to a 20g tank that I am setting up. My question is what should I replace the pleated cartridge with? I bought it used and it didnt come with anything else. I googled it but all I see for sale is the pleated cartridge.
They make a filter basket that can hold biological media and a blue filter sleeve around the OD.

With the basket you'll have uninterrupted biological filtration even after a cleaning. The pleated sleeve doesn't work like that.

Doesn't look like the sleeve is considered a "replacement part" so you'd have to source that from the LFS or another online store.

Thanks, I appreciate it.
I have one of those and I have to rotate a bleach cleaned cartidge in every week or flow decreases to almost nothing. I've been looking at other options for superfine filtering.
filter

I have that filter but I'm having a problem on how to clean the water; I remove 3/4 of the water in the tank, replace the carbon stuff, clean the bue sleeve sponge and started it but after a week the water is already dirty or not clear, not like when it was new it too about 2-3 weeks before I have to clean it. how do you take the impeller out at the bottom of the filter cause there's full of gunk in it, maybe that is why it gets dirty fast.....
Just pull that piece out of the bottom and the impeller is under it. Mine almost falls out but it's nearly 20 years old. lol
I use the pleated filter and some diatom powder. Great stuff. but its a 12 24 hr max and time to clean. once a week I do this. Try it
Chiming in late, I have the same one on my tank. I removed half the carbon inside it, and it started pumping the water out like crazy again.
H.o.t. 250

I took the bottom where the impeller is and cleaned it real good, took 3/4 of the water from the tank cleaned the blue sponge like sleeve and the water inside the filter but did not change the carbon since I replaced it 2-3 days ago and plug it in but after 3 days the water is turning cloudy again ! It used to last 2-3 weeks before I change everything and now these ! what am I doing wrong? need help !!!!!:icon_conf
