Pregnant or Sick?

923 Views 9 Replies 6 Participants Last post by  Menace

Just recently (tonight) saw that this female was really swollen compared to the other one. Naturally the male has been chasing them around but I wouldn't think she'd swell up within hours.

Any thoughts would be appreciated and any treatments if not sure if she's pregnant would also be nice. I only have this tank so any treatments would have to be ok for the other 2 guppies and a snail.

I did add some rotala indica to the tank and figured I'd throw in a DIY Root tab. Though every time I put in a root tab the snail knows it, finds it, and digs it up. It was to the surface and exposed when I turned on the lights to the tank. I quickly buried the osmocote pellets but I saw the fish nibbling on the dissolving gelatin capsule. That's when I noticed the female was swollen.

Thanks everyone. :(

She looks like an expecting mother to me.
I'd be concerned only because it came on suddenly.
With pregnancy, they slowly balloon until they look like they have double chins over a course of weeks, although some carry it better than others.
Female guppies are gluttons by nature, and will try to eat anything that sinks passed them.
I would feed a blanched, shelled pea. Divide it in approx. 6 pieces. Every thing in the tank would benefit from it. If she is pregnant, helps. If she ate something funny, helps pass it. Good for the others, and the snail would love you for it.
When in doubt, pea.

Prego she probably has been growing in size and you haven't noticed. If she has her scales sticking out away from her body then you have to worry.
Thanks for the replies. I looked this morning and she is completely back to normal. My guess, and like stef said, is she was pigging out on that gelatin shell. I dont see any large amounts of poop though so I dont know where it all went. (The swelling)

Dropsy. My female guppy was swollen like that and appeared to be ready to give birth, but she lost it when I added her to the tank. She then swelled up again and didn't stop.

Dropsy is pretty much guaranteed death.

I hope not. I'm pretty sure one of the males died from Dropsy so I hope the females don't have it too. She is appearing to be fine right now, I'm hoping she just ate too much.
Her scales are nice and smooth and she's a nice shape for a pregnant guppy.
In my experience with dropsy, the scales stick out like a pine cone.

Yes with the male the scales protuded like a pinecone but her scales are normal. She still looks a little swollen I think but I don't think she would be showing signs of pregnancy that fast.
