I used to cut the cartridges up so they became little more than frames and then stuffed the basket loosely with filter floss using the old cartridge too keep it from floating out.

Same here.. I have a TOM mini canister in my nano at work and I stuff it with filter floss. Since I do 2x weekly water changes it is more than adequate.
