Have any of you tried the poret foam media in your fluidized filters? I'm sure the foam has more surface area letting you use less per volume. It is way cheaper on top of it. My concern is maybe it does not clean itself as well being porous and possibly lighter weight. Or maybe it doesn't tumble as well being square. If anybody has tried it I would be interested in your input.

I haven't tried it, but a couple of thoughts from my experiences with foam. sometimes it floats, sometimes it sinks, depending on how much air is trapped in it. I could see a traditional air drive fluidized filter driving air into the sponge and causing them to float exclusively. You might be able to solve this using a power head instead of or in conjuction with the air. I would imagine pushing water down through the foam would work better than pushing water up. The other thing is that even though the foam might not be self cleaning, it would be a fairly simple task to take some out and squeeze it clean with water changes

I started using Aqua cubes in my sump 6 weeks ago and haven't come to any conclusions yet. I scooped several net fulls out from the bottom of the sump after 4 weeks of use and gave them a squeeze over a bucket to see if any gunk had accumulated in them. Happy to report very little discoloration or particulate matter in the water I squeezed out. Before purchasing I sent Swiss Tropicals an email with several questions I had and they were very responsive and provided me with recommendations specific to my application, very helpful and knowledgeable people. There is a YT vid of these being used in a moving bed filter, skip to about the 35 second mark in the video. https://youtu.be/Thx-AQV806k
