Poll - PAR Meter loan

2677 Views 23 Replies 14 Participants Last post by  somewhatshocked
If you could borrow an Apogee PAR meter for a week, and had to send a security deposit of $50, $100, etc. to do so, but only had to pay about $20 for shipping both ways, would you borrow it? And, what is the most you would be willing to send as a security deposit?

Count me in. No problem with security deposit, up to replacement cost. You do have to protect yourself.

Please put me first in line. I'd be happy to kick start the program.

I'd be willing to pop 20 bucks to see what the actual par is in my tank. I can picture creating a log of readings at different settings for future use as well. Any security deposit to cover damage or loss would be fine. Anxious to hear what the final details of any plan would be.
Lol, this is right when my local aquarium group is looking into buying a PAR meter for the group.
Par meter

Yeah, I would definitely pay a deposit to borrow a PAR meter.
I can't participate, but would love to see a list of tanks and lights to get tested. I'm particularly curious about the PAR for the new LED tank kits from Walmart.

I agree with all the above.
If I didn't already have my own I'd be down. An actual meter really takes the guesswork out of things.
I agree with Greggz.

I admit I am surprised! With the shoe on my foot I would have said $100 would be the most I would even consider providing as a security deposit. So, it may be a viable plan to ask for $100 or more as a deposit.

My good news, at least for now, is that my semi-DIY PAR meter is working, after a difficult job getting it to function at all. It is a Apogee PAR sensor, the original spectral response version, with a digital meter which should give PAR readings accurate to around 5%, depending on how many corrective factors you use. Apogee is now admitting that making measurements under water gives low readings, so you need to multiply the reading by 1.08 to correct for the refraction effects. Then there is a correction factor for various types of lighting, including a still unknown correction for LED lights with a lot of near IR light in the spectrum.

I still have a bit more mechanical stuff to add, and some underwater testing, before it can be ready to loan out. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that the underwater testing will go ok. Possibly I will be able to borrow one of the improved Apogee PAR meters to get a usable correction factor for at least the Finnex Planted+ light.

I'm thinking along the lines of requiring borrowers being members of TPT for at least a year, and a pTrader rating of 100% for at least 5-10 transactions. But, I'm ahead of myself for now, not having completed the build and testing.

I wouldn't qualify to borrow it, but that is fine and I think your requirements are a good idea overall. It would be really cool if anyone that did borrow it returned it with several plants or some other item in appreciation.

You don't want to package wet stuff and electronics together :)

Apparently the moderators here haven't given any thought to how the forum would handle a member who loans out something expensive routinely. I asked if it would be ok to do this through the RAOK forum and, to my surprise, no answer yet. I realize that no one gets paid for moderating here, so it is volunteer activity, and is fitted into their lives where convenient, not as a high priority job. So, patience is my new middle name >:)
Or you can bypass their raok debate and post it as for trade.
Give clear instructions on the deposit.

I posted my offer to loan out my PAR meter in the For Sale forum. Still no word from the moderators about using the RAOK forum.
This is a great idea! Maybe someone can figure out what the PAR is on the updated Fluval Specs.
I'm not sure how long this loan program can go on. The moderators ruled that I can't do it, at least not on the RAOK forum. But, I have already started, on the For Sale forum. We will soon find out how this is going to play out.

Super cool of you to do. If it works out, I'd be interested in trying it out.

It should be fine in the for sale forum. I think the issue is that there should be no exchange of money in roak even though nobody is making a profit.
