I bought a new bowfront 18 gallon. It has a plastic opaque hood and a single bulb light. I would like to light it for plants.

Do they make glass hoods for bows?

What can i do to the light I have to convert it to pc?

That looks like the old hood to my bowfront. Is it the same width as a 10 gallon and by ALLGlass? My tank is a 16 gallon. They do make a glass top to the 16 gallon, I bought one at my local fish store, it was a special order someone never picked up. If you wanted to increase the lighting you could use an incandescent hood and Lights of America screw-ins from Walmart, or you could buy a 20" coralife fixture.

You probably won't be able to use an incandescent hood that's made for a 10 gallon. The hood will be cut in a square shape, not in the shape that you see for the bowfront tank.

You could try an AHSupply retrofit kit with remote ballast on the back. Give Kim at AHS a call with the dimensions of the plastic hood and he'll give you a better idea of what's possible. I think that will be your best bet.

Unless you're going with an open top tank, the opening you have after you remove the fluorescent strip won't be big enough for a 20" Coralife fixture to shine through.

Oh, use smaller pics or some thumbnails. =P It's too hard to see the pictures at this resolution (1024x786).

No, you can use the incandescent light strip, because that is what I use, the light strip itself is separate from the hood. If that is what you decide to do to replace the single fluorescent tube just switch them out. the only difference between a 10 gallon hood and the 16 gallon hood it the rounded front lid that can be lifted up to feed the fish. I should have said light strip and not hood. Thanks, Epicfish

Hmmm...maybe we have different hoods?

The incandescent hood I have is this one:

The incandescent hood is one-piece so that's why I said you can't fit it onto a bowfront tank. Maybe your incandescent is like my fluorescent? =)

The fluorescent hood I have is this:

The light strip comes off of the other parts.

It's a challenge!

In my opinion, this is the biggest challenge w/ bowfront tanks, and ultimately what drove me from it. I did have a glass top (AGA sells them), but you might still only be able to put a light strip of similar size to what is on the plastic hood. if you are luck with a glass top retrofit you may be able to fit a double tube T8. Check the exact distance between the hinge on the glass top and the tubing you have on the rear of your tank. From memory it seems to me that most twin tubes are about 6" wide. Good luck!
