This is going to sound cheesy. Has anyone attached fake rock together vs real rock for a cichlid tank?

yes, this has been done, not that cheesy, saves weight and lets you more easily customize the caves... some people even make their own fake rocks... search on here and you will see a few different ways to make your own rocks. I am experimenting with this at the moment.

I'd love to make my own rocks. If I had acess to a kiln it would be done.

You dont' need a kiln. I have never done it but from I have read all you need is foam, a certain typ of epoxy and a bit of artistic/crafty touch.

If you look it up on the DIY forum you will find lots of info. Some of the things people make are quite nice and very realistic looking
