Plants in pots question

998 Views 7 Replies 7 Participants Last post by  DogFish
I have some giant hair grass in the background of my tank. They came in pots. Is it ok to plant them in the tank with the pot? Or should I remove them from the pots?

Thanks for the help

remove
yes, remove the wool and pots then plant, depending on some plants you might need to anchor them to something
I have heard mixed reviews. The pots have slots for the roots to grow through.
Remove them, especially for plants that send out runners, like hair grass and microswords. Good luck every removing the pot from your tank when that stuff has established itself as a carpet and cemented itself in place. Just be careful removing the roots from the rockwool. You want as much to hold on to the substrate as possible, or else it'll want to float.
Remove them from the pots. I've purchased anubias and crypts from the LFS that were so overgrown that their rhizomes were contorted and twisted due to growing in the pots for so long.

Hello Jm...

I do the pot thing with a bit of a twist. I take the plants out of the original pots and repot them in a good organic Miracle Gro mixture and gravel and use larger, plastic pots. The plants grow really well with the Miracle Gro. But, beware. Using the potting mixture can be messy if you're not careful.

The Rock Wool most potted plants come in will eventually be a mess in your tank.I raise all my plants that are not in display tanks, in 4" clay pots and they do very well. I use MTS and a sand cap in the pots.
