Plants and fish that like to bury them selfs?

I need a substrate that will grow plants and will accommodate soft skinned puffers that like to bury them self's (preferably in black). I love the look of Tahitian moon but it not marked as burrowing safe, not sure why. Also I don't think it the best for a planted tank. I need a replacement, but I don't know what. Help!

I've got Tahaitian Moon in 3 heavily planted tanks with corydoras. Go with that and you will be fine.
Maybe some pool filter sand? I think that should be OK with plants and burrowing fish. No nutrients unless added though.
I haven't had the best results with Tahitian moon. The plants never seem to take a strong root. If they are buried to deep they just seem to simply live (not grow). To shallow and you find one floating in the top of the tank. Plus I will be getting a Fugu, I want something comfy for him/her to bury themselve in.

Tearing down, rebuilding an aquarium is a substantial amount of work. I have this one opportunity to get a substrate that works for both my plants and fish.

Oh, Yeah GO EHEIM. Once you know you never go back. (yes I'm talking to you Rena and Fluval folks)
You will definitely need some substrate ferts like RootMedic Complete or some root tab's to get the plants to flourish in the TMS. Anything finer than TMS will possibly fly all over the tank at the slightest disturbance. If you do find something softer than TMS let us know. My assassin snails bury themselves in it with relative ease and frequency.
tuffgong: Do you inject ferts into the substrate? If so how do you do it with out taking a swim?

FUGU is a generic term, it is the Japanese word for pufferfish and the dish prepared from the meat of pufferfish. a FUGU fish could be almost any kind of puffer.
i also think all the fish refered to as FUGU are SW not FW...

I use RootMedic Complete capsules. I insert them into my TMS about every 3-5" that is planted. Justin/Over_Stocked has a sale going on right now. You can check out the capsules at his site: http://rootmedic.net/products-page/nutrients/rootmedic-complete-original/
I am using CaribSea Moonlight Sand which is very fine. My Corydoras love the stuff as does my Bulldog Pleco who has dug a trench under my driftwood. It is like a fine mud when wet almost. I am using a pre-filter as a precaution but it doesn't fly around all that much.
