planted tank+dead fish= snails? help!

I had a planted tank with hairgrass. I had a red tail black shark in that tank. It died about 3 weeks ago, sadly :[. I left it in there and left the filter system off. I see a handful of snails, i think, in my tank! There very small and tiny, but has anyone heard of this and how this can happen? Please anyone tell me whats happening...

You must've had one or two hitckhikers. They feasted on the dead body and now you have 15 million of them.

Plants in your tank. :D

You could've missed them on a plant shipment or maybe you missed the egg cases.

I only saw snails grow after my fish died

Maybe the fish was eating the eggs and small snails and you didn't notice the snail population until the fish was dead.

Can snails just grow like this.. what do they live on to sustain itself..?

The snails could have hitch hiked from the plants or maybe when they fish was netted, the person got some snails eggs. The snails may have hatched and were too small to see. Only when they found a feast (dead fish), did they start to go towards it.

Ikuzo is a aquatic mathematician :D

Snails will probably find their way in your tank somehow. They don't become a problem until you overfeed, or like you said, something dies. Then they eat and lay a lot of eggs.

The whole concept of "spontaneous appearance" was shot down over 100 years ago.

To have many snails in your tank you had to start with a few. Dead fish do not magically transform into snails.

However snails can transform a dead fish into a bunch more snails.
