What about a 10 gal. I'm been moving stuff around to get the tank set up and I'm afraid my 20 gal isn't going to fit. So I'm going get my 10 gal going instead. All the same parimaters would apply heavily planted with one betta.If doing regular water changes on a tank that size with just a Betta, no you wouldn't need a filter. You could consider running an airstone or bubble curtain with a small air pump just for some circulation in the tank though. I've had trouble effectively regulating the temperature in the past with tanks that have low circulation.
Aquarium heaters heat the water immediately around them and if there is no circulation then the thermometer will register that the preset temperature was reached even though it is only that temperature near the heater. The heater tubes need water flow to evenly distribute the heat in the tank. At least that has been my experience.What about a 10 gal. You could do an air pump and a couple of air stones or a couple of sponge filters.So would it probably be safer for me to just get the AquaClear 5-20 gal on the 10 gal and then put the water flow on the lowest setting so it doesn't bother the betta, and that way I just won't have to worry about parameters getting out of range because I wouldn't have a way for the good bacteria to colonize.

I'll have to check that out, the reason I was looking at the AquaClear because a friend of mine had one and it was only 20 shipped on certain orders which I thought wasn't too bad, also the reviews were pretty good.You can also get a Marina S15 filter for $9 shipped (on certain orders, still a great price):
