Planted Tank and No Filter?

6790 Views 13 Replies 7 Participants Last post by  Al3x
I'm looking at getting my 20 gal tall set back up with it main purpose to grow plants. Heavily planted with low to med light plants. I have seen people that have planted tanks with fish and no filter because the plants take care of the oxygen and the whole nitrogen cycle.

The only fish I was considering putting in the tank is a betta, which I know don't like fast moving water. I had been considering the AquaClear 5-20 gal with adjustable flow, but know I'm wondering if I even need a pump for a heavily planted tank with only one fish.

If any one has any experience or insight into this any info you have would be great.

If you're doing water changes as you are supposed to than no, no filter. I ran a 29 with no filter for a couple of years on my back porch. And I didn't always follow my own advice. I took it down because I rearranged things in the fish house. And even there I have a few tanks with no filters.

Thanks for the info. The water changes won't be an issue I'm used to dealing with goldfish and koi who are very messy.
Thanks for the advice.
If doing regular water changes on a tank that size with just a Betta, no you wouldn't need a filter. You could consider running an airstone or bubble curtain with a small air pump just for some circulation in the tank though. I've had trouble effectively regulating the temperature in the past with tanks that have low circulation.

What about a 10 gal. I'm been moving stuff around to get the tank set up and I'm afraid my 20 gal isn't going to fit. So I'm going get my 10 gal going instead. All the same parimaters would apply heavily planted with one betta.
Thanks for the advice and what issues do you have with regulating the temp?
I think a smaller tank might need some sort of filtration. They are very susceptible to parameters drifting. My 125 with sump has only 2 filter socks which are cleaned weekly.

Aquarium heaters heat the water immediately around them and if there is no circulation then the thermometer will register that the preset temperature was reached even though it is only that temperature near the heater. The heater tubes need water flow to evenly distribute the heat in the tank. At least that has been my experience.
So would it probably be safer for me to just get the AquaClear 5-20 gal on the 10 gal and then put the water flow on the lowest setting so it doesn't bother the betta, and that way I just won't have to worry about parameters getting out of range because I wouldn't have a way for the good bacteria to colonize.
Thanks for all the suggestions.

You could do an air pump and a couple of air stones or a couple of sponge filters.

If the heater is placed horizontally on the bottom of the tank you will induce convection currents since heat rises.
That being said my tank was on my back porch. While I do live in Florida we do get down into the 30s and 40s here. That tank was outside with a heater. Old old Supreme heater that was not submersible. The temps did vary and what I found the fish schooled in the area they felt comfortable. I assume the OPs tank will be inside so it would be easier to control temps.
You can also get a Marina S15 filter for $9 shipped (on certain orders, still a great price):

I have two and they work well. Flow can be adjusted easily.

I'll have to check that out, the reason I was looking at the AquaClear because a friend of mine had one and it was only 20 shipped on certain orders which I thought wasn't too bad, also the reviews were pretty good.
Thanks for the other option.
And it sounds like the consensus is some circulation in the water is better then no circulation.

Yeah, it's a small and simple filter and the flow isn't too strong, but it does its job well and is super cheap.

The only thing is it's a tad noisy but if you cut a strip of filter padding or something soft and put it where the filter touches the tank it gets pretty quiet.

Yeah I agree, a little flow is better than nothing.
