Looking for recommendations - and reasons why - for something in the 5-10g range. I like the look of the Tetra Crescent 5g but I'm not sold on it and the Fluval range seems popular here. Is there any reason to prefer one over the other?

Are there others I should consider?

FWIW, I'm planning on an inert black gravel substrate and using Excel, not DIY or pressurized CO2. If I get the Crescent, I would swap the light out for something more powerful.

Shape: the Fluval looks more compact but I suspect the elongated shape of the crescent would be more flexible for aquascaping purposes.

I just picked up a Fluval Ebi but I haven't put water in it yet. I definitely like the shape of it in terms of being able to put it on a counter or bookshelf or something.

People seem to have good luck scaping it.

The fluval shrimp stratum has some ability to lower water hardness and pH but it seems pretty limited from what most people are reporting.

With Tigers they can survive in harder water but you may have trouble breeding them without going to atleast part RO water. I got 40 regular tiger shrimp about 6 weeks ago and while I have had zero losses (and no signs of ill health) with them I have had zero berried shrimp (though only some of them appear to be adults). The Red Cherry Shrimp in the same 16G tank started breeding immediately. Things like RCS hormones and water temp could also be playing a role in the lack of Tiger breeding but the fact that not even one has become berried seems sort of telling to me.

Thanks for the tips. I'm planning on using RO water with enough GH Booster to reach 3 dGH for pH stability, which hopefully will get my water down into the upper 6 range.

My impression on scaping is that the cube, by keeping things tight, requires greater symmetry than the crescent and limits the size of hardscape.

I've found very little information about the Crescent though so I'm curious why.
