Plant Recommendations And A Couple Questions

763 Views 4 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  Opare

Hey, I'm looking for a couple plant ideas as I currently have celestial pearl danios and I know that they need a pretty heavily planted tank to feel a little more natural.

Right now I have an anubius nana from my previous tank and I put in some cryptocoryne spiralis the other day, as well as attached java moss to a piece of lava rock I had in my previous tank. I had java moss before in my tank attached to the lava rock, but it didn't seem to do well last time, I'm not sure why that is.

As for questions, I'm mostly wondering what kind of plants I can sustain with my lighting. The tank is roughly 25 gallons and I am currently running two T8 bulbs which are the 15w Aqua-Glo and the 15w Sun-Glow. I do have frogbit floaters though so I'm not sure if that will affect the amount of light the plants get very much. I am not running CO2 but I do have flourish tabs in the substrate. I do not dose liquid ferts at this time.

I am planning on hopefully introducing shrimps later on so I understand that having a planted tank will help them as well. I am thinking of getting dwarf hairgrass to try and carpet the front of the tank but I have had issues with it melting in my previous tank so I'm unsure if it's my light being inadequate or something else.

Dwarf hair grass melts in new tank but will get one after turning brown so you should not remove thinking its dead.
DHG will melt with improper lighting conditions, and if you buy it emersed then it for sure will melt no matter what submerged.. I think it was your lighting that did the trick though. they require CO2 and high light
I see. So should I stay away from DHG for now? With my lighting what would my tank be considered? What could I do to increase my light levels?
You are probably looking at low-light with all the floaters, which is good since you don't run CO2.
Go to the Tropica website, and look at plants in the easy section, you can basically use from there. That means a lot of Crypts, Java Fern varieties and moss.
Your Java Moss may not have done well because it needs a degree of flow so it doesn't get cluttered with debris.
Also the Crypts in your tank are probably not C. spiralis, looks like C. lutea to me.
