Where I picked it up it should have been in nitrate overload!!!! The entire lake had 2+ feet of and more course silt of organics. I'm not sure how deep it was but that's as far as my arm could reach. The plants were rooted in this silt if you could call it that. They were more or less floating in it. :D

It's very cool to think I may have stumbled on to something.

While the leaves look like Vallisneria, the base does not. My best guess would be some Sagittaria species. No matter what it is, you've got something really cool there. I'm interested in seeing how it does in your tank.

Thanks guys I will update this thread with more pictures when it settles in and starts growing.
Googled this up accidentally. You never posted more, @jmowbray. What was it? Did it live?
