I am working with a low tech fish and plants tank. I am having difficulties growing the plants available at the big chain pet store. I have been reading that plants grow from rhizomes. Are there any plants that can be direct sowed into my gravel substrate? Can the plants be potted in the tank or something so they root prior to pushing into the gravel?

not all plants grow from rhiomes. The ones that do (anubias) the rhizome needs to be exposed. These are usually attached to driftwood or rocks. look for some easy stem plants or bulb plants for your substrate

Java fern also grow from a rhizome. You can plant these guys in your substrate as long as you leave the entire rhizome exposed. Its the stem looking thing all the leaves grow on.
