Hi guys
I have a 10 gallon its been cycling for 3 weeks( no fish just a piece of java moss) and I have been planning to add some cherry shrimp and 8 ember tetras with a HMPK will it work? Can I find a plakat betta in a petco or petsmart or are they hard to find? Also whats the most common color in a plakat betta

thank you

I am by no stretch of the imagination a betta expert, but everything I've read on this and similar forums says it's a toss-up that depends on the particular betta's personality. Some will watch shrimp swim past without reacting, and some will kill everything else in the tank, including other fish.

Plakat just means short fin. You can definitely find them in petcos. They will have a variety of colors, pick one you like the look of that seems healthy. BUT don't be too surprised if they change color on you after you get them. The bettas being sold are quite young and can go through several color morphs before they reach adulthood.

Temperament of bettas is all over the place. Every one I've ever had has gleefully hunted down all shrimp in the tank except large amanos which could put up a fight. The ember tetras might be fine... or not depending again on the temperament. It's a watch and see kind of thing and you might need to separate them if they don't get along. Providing a complex aquascape with lots of hiding spots behind tall plants/wood etc can help.
