I want to say that in my old tanks, they lived a couple of years (from PetsMart), but it's been so long ago that I don't really remember. I just bought some from there a month ago for my new tank. They looked fairly mature already, but it's difficult for me to gauge how old they are.

They're almost certainly wild-caught fish and there's no guessing age besides size. And they're a notoriously tough fish to use nets on and many have abrasions around their faces from rough handling, which can become infected. They have a rougher go than most from the Amazon tributaries to your aquarium, but if they make the journey can live for quite a while. Never bought them from Petsmart specifically, but I've had otos live a good 3-4 years.
