i'm planning on planting a 5.5G tank with just hc
i read that h.c. likes tighter substrate to deeply root so since i'll be using root tabs.

if i mix sand with gravel, it shouldn't produce any harmful gas pockets right?

The thing that will happen is over time the sand will migrate to the bottom and the gravel to the top. In a tank that small I doubt you'll be having substrate more than around 2.5 inches deep, and that's where the gas pockets start becoming a problem.

Hmm, I may not have been clear; in a tank that size you probably won't have enough substrate for pockets to form, so you could go ahead with your idea. Or, you could do all sand. Or you could go with eco or flourite since you won't have to buy very much.

also if you're not injecting co2, then you just go ahead and kill them now and save yourself the pain later. Or try Excel

what? im assuming you're talking about hc and not the fish right?
yea im gonna have diy co2 for now.. maybe upgrade later

Good luck with DIY and HC. You really might want to consider a dry start first.

You could always get some MTS to help move the substrate.
They have never bothered any of my plants.
