So I'm sitting here looking at my XY dual sponge filter...

...and I just finished watching and reading up on "Fluidized Sand Bed Aquarium Filters"...

...when it struck me that the little clear tube looked very much like a FSB sans the media...and that "De Nitrate" was supposedly designed to work in filters under 50gph.

Which brings me to the dumbest sponge filter question ever!

What would happen if I put some De Nitrate into the tube of a XY sponge filter?

...(I cannot be the only person to have pondered such things)...

I had to ponder the thought for a while. I would think it a way to go with certain limits. Would not want to add so much that the water flow through the filter was cut down enough to lose filter capacity? But I don't go into very much work to remove nitrate but let the plants and water changing do that part for me. Even though I don't/can't measure them, I feel there are other pollutants which I want to change out in water changes.

Perhaps such a small amount of Denitrate inside the tube would be pointless...

Still it then becomes albeit a very small...2-stage filter instead of a single sponge.

I spent all of 30-seconds to draw how I thought it might work. Figured maybe it's better then nothing and if you gave it a shake every time you cleaned a filter all the better.

*Updated the drawing to better reflect the filter and idea*

I may have a built in aversion to complicating things that work? I'm a fan of sponge filters for the right situations. Part of that is the simple design and I full admit that I like simple.
But I also admit that I've not tried it and it might work really well for you. The thought is that it is not a permanent change that could not be undone easily. Small labor and investment, which might give you something that works better for your use?
I've chased far wierder ideas!

I'm going to try it and see...I updated the drawing to better reflect how the sponge filter actually looks physically.

I may actually go one step further and if I "think" it works I will set up 2x 10-gallon tanks and do a fishless cycle using ammonia one with a sponge filter with DeNitrate, and the other without, just to see if there is any noticeable difference.

Since you're already running an air pump why not use a old school corner filter full of media. They can be found for $5.
I could but I'm only doing shrimp and bettas and fact is I'm just reinventing a wheel and probably breaking it because I only need the sponge filter.

Ads killing use of the forum?

Follow the links and read far enough to find the way to clear the ads which are killing you.
Under important announcements and new site look but you will have to read a bunch as it is killing several and likely a bunch of folks who have not had time to sort out what is happening with the new ads. When ads are moving full time it is much the same as streaming a movie and it does max out my machines memory and CPU.
