I also would love to know too...curious if the lava rock raises the PH and hardness of the water too.

As far as I am aware lava rock is inert and completely safe for tanks. I'll leave it for others to chime in as well.

Lava rock is inert. But if you're concerned about it, give it a good rinse and then test it.

If it's for grills and fire pits, it's often treated with chemicals. If it's from a landscaping supply center or big box hardware store? Probably safe and just needs a rinse.

The lava rock I get, from landscape stores, is indeed inert, does not alter any of the aquarium tests I have. It sure needed rinsing though! The dustiest material I have dealt with!
I use the pea sized material in refugium/planted sump/whatever. I grow house plants in it, and pump the aquarium water through it.
