Hey everyone!

I'm in the process of converting my saltwater Red Sea C-250 to a planted tank. While there are always many reasons to do such a thing, my primary one was that I was raised on freshwater tanks and I want my kids to have the same experience.

When I was little in our 3 bedroom house, there was one room for my mom and dad, one room for my sister and I to share, and one room for my Dad's fish. He loved freshwater fish and I want to pass along that tradition to my kids.

For the last 3 years I had a saltwater tank, but I had always told myself I would set up a separate tank for freshwater when my kids were 3. Well, they are 3 now and it turns out twin 3 year old twin boys don't leave a lot of time for maintaining two tanks. So, after more emotional soul searching than one would think, I decided the saltwater has to go and the freshwater is going to be built.

@DaveK has been a constant source of support for me as I built my saltwater tank and he recommended I follow this forum as well.

I know almost nothing about planted tanks. My experience with freshwater was many years ago as a kid with sunken treasure chests and divers as decorations. So, I don't even know what kinds of plants exist, let alone what I want.

Right now, I've got my tank set up and I am cycling it...meaning I have water and substrate sitting in an otherwise empty tank because I'm not quite sure what to do next.

I need to work through minor issues like how I want to aquascape it, what fish I want, what plants do I get and how do I keep them alive, what filtration I'm going to use, what is CO2 injection and is it good, and many, many other things.

So, I expect to learn a lot by reading this forum.

Anyway, good to be here and I'm already learning a lot vicariously through all of you! I welcome any and all opinions.

Looks good so far :), what are your scape plans? I do recommend pressurized co2 (and fertilizers), as well as possibly a good Canister filter. Which kind is ultimately up to you and the reviews lol! Remember though, here's my tip: Do as much research as possibly on something you want, and make sure you will like it for years to come.

I really have no aquascape plans. I'm currently checking out other tanks on this forum for ideas.

Do you have any thoughts on CO2 injection or fertilizers? So far, I've mostly just confused myself on those topics. I've been searching these forums for thoughts.

I think I understand canister filters and I agree I'll probably end up getting one.

Thanks so much for the ideas and the welcome!

This is the Co2 Setup I have, its not the cheapest, and you could save some $ by just purchasing the regulator and stuff then the tank separately, save like 25$ or so. GLA GRO CO2 System | Green Leaf Aquariums

These are some fertz, good reviews. Aquarium Plant Fertilizer | Green Leaf Aquariums

Heres some how to links with the Co2. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qssql8ZA8mU , http://www.plantedtank.net/forums/2...12-pressurized-co2-just-thought-id-share.html

No problem and im glad you liked them, for good fertz and setups (you may be able to find some cheaper) that's the cheapest I could find and got, great results IMO or for what I needed. (high-tech). If you need anymore help just shoot me a PM or quote me :)
Thanks

I'll likely take you up on that. Those links were extremely helpful!

BTW, I loved the "looks good so far". No one can put water and sand in a tank like I can!

So, I got my scape done, what do you think?

OK, obviously I kid. My twin 3 year old twin boys were very excited to help. They helped me wash the slate and get everything in the tank. It's a lot of fun, but very slow. So, all I was really trying to do was shove some stuff in the tank and start to get a sense of dimensions.

But, I can see what I was planning (kind of a rocky looking mound on the left and a more forestry look on the right), isn't going to work out with what I got. The wood is bigger than I thought and the slate smaller (I think). I'll have to figure out what to do about that...someday. I never know how long that will take in my household.

That wood look good. Also, instead of GLA, which is a bit pricey, how about co2art? GLA's cheapest dual stage red is almost 400, while co2art sells them for about 120, while their top-end model is about 230. Also, AlanLe on this forum builds regs, and I know that he can make nice regs for about $200. I say go with some dragon stone, slate doesnt look too good, especially with what I think you are going for.
I prefer Aquarium Fertilizer | NilocG Aquatics for ferts, he actually sells them in proper ratios. For example, EI doses 1:1:4 for macros. GLA will give you 3 one pound bags, while nilocg will sell 2x 1/2 pound bags and a 2 pound bag.
You haven't mentioned lighting, what is your budget and do you have anything in mind?

Really awesome detailed advice, thanks very much!!! I'm definitely glad to hear the dragon stone is the better choice and I love the co2 and fertilizer tips. I know nothing about that, so it helps a lot!!!

I'm going with DIY LED lighting because I want to keep my hood and it's the only way I could think to do it. I considered going hoodless (and it would have been cheaper and I think worked well), but I'm afraid my 3 old kids will throw trains in the tank if I do that. :) I am going to have to figure out how to dial in the right spectrum and intensity, though.

Good start. Could be just me, but I've been seeing a lot of 65 gallon tanks popping up on here recently! That's great because I just picked one up recently as well.

I see also, like you, being a saltwater convert, 65 gallon tanks seem to be pretty popular for saltwater.
I just noticed I've actually been reading a lot of your threads because you seem like you've been thinking through the same issues I need to only you know a lot more and are much more advanced. :). So, I'm learning from your posts. I couldn't find your tank thread when I just looked, though?

I think 65 is really a sweet spot for saltwater. Not too big, but big enough to have a lot of options. Great to see another saltwater convert!

I'm also trying to think through the tall tank thing etc. :). As you can see, right now I'm just putting semi random stuff in the tank and seeing if I like it. :)

I have specs on BML lights if you would like them, in terms of LEDS, number and color used. I planned out a very powerful fixture and I can send you the specs if you would like.

Contact Steve's LEDs, they make an LED retrofit for your tank's hood that my reefing buddy bought and installed in his hood and it's really slick. I'm sure they would make a freshwater friendly version with fewer LEDs for you.

I don't really know that much... That's why I have so many threads on here. :laugh2: The only thread I have is from my old 55 gallon setup. So far, my tanks have not progressed at all so thats why I don't have any journals. I've actually never done saltwater. Welcome to freshwater!!

I'm probably already set in terms of what I'm going to do for this particular tank, but I'd still LOVE to see your specs. It would help me in the future.

This is actually exactly what I'm doing! They did talk me through ordering a freshwater version and they said they have actually done that several times. I haven't installed it yet (the lights on my tank now are still my saltwater), but I think it should work out pretty well. Thanks!!!

I'd love to keep up with what plants and fish you settle on. I'm trying to think that through and I think we have a lot of interests in common. :)

I was planning on using 40 CREE 5000k 3w emitters, 8 royal blue, and 12 660nm reds. These are nearly identical to the BML fixture that I use. I was planning on using a Coralux storm controller and a heatsink from heatsinkusa.com. I never got around to choosing a power supply and I was going to run 4 Meanwell ldd drivers, the 700 ones. I am by no means a pro, so if this wouldnt work for any reason, someone can correct me.
