Paradise Fish??

I'm getting conflicting info off the web so I need some help please.

Are Paradise Fish the same as Gourami's??

I am asking because I would like to keep Macropodus Opercularis (paradise fish) with Trichogaster leeri
(pearl gourami) but some sites say those are both gourami family some don't mention the connection. I know gourami can be territorial esp with their own kind....

Both are labrynth fish but that does'nt mean gourami...right?

Thanks

I wanted to get some paradise fish for my community tank a while back. I used to work at a pet store and they always got along with their fish mates (other paradise fish and Gouramis). The thing is every now and then I would see two of them locking jaws and fighting (which apparently is common with them from what I have read) but the pet store's tanks are very small. I think they should be okay with only Gouramis in the tank as long as its big enough for them to have their own territories or space to run away to.
They are semi aggressive fish. Shouldn't be kept with gouramis or bettas or slow fish with long fins.

I have kept many paradise fish in the past. Yes, they're a form of gourami...they could get along with T. leeri if they have enough room and cover to get out of each other's hair (don't mix with domesticated bettas...males especially will go after other anabantoids even if the larger PF's have no interest). Paradise fishes definitely behave better with other fishes when kept in groups...however, they are unexpectedly predatory and will occasionally rip apart danios and similar sized fishes they were getting on with perfectly the day before in what appear to be predatory attacks even if they don't fit in their mouths (platy-sized and larger fishes are safe). I have kept groups of as many as 5 paradise fishes in a 20 long before, but I've found that irregardless of how many paradise fishes are in the tank they are disease prone...all but one of my M. opercularis died young from illness and were always the first fishes to take ill if stuff went wrong, perhaps a consequence of mass production. I would recommend getting wild fishes if possible (they are reportedly VERY hardy...first non-goldfish in the hobby for a reason!) or perhaps even try another species in the genus (avoid M. hongkongensis and occelatus...the former is psychotic and the latter needs a wintering period in the 50's that the pearl gouramies would not appreciate). Might not hurt to try the related Pseudosphromenus genus...not quite as pretty, but smaller and easier to fit in communities.

hmmm so it sounds like they are not the same makeup as the other housemates i have planned...plan is to have the Pearls be the showgirls in the tank and I would rather not upshow them or have them nipped and bullied.

add in some cory cats / other catfish/ boesemans rainbow - i think i will have to pass on the paradise and find someone friendlier

Definitely pass on the paradise fish, they're aggressive and their bite is very dangerous. It would eat the eyeballs and barbells off of your cory cats before finishing them off completely.

I actually think they're gorgeous and love their betta/puppy-like personalities. I would love to have a large group of them in a sufficiently large tank but they're a dangerous addition to most community setups.

I wonder how they'd fare in a cichlid tank...
