I want peoples opinions on R. Wachilli, I have the plant in my 55g tank I'm not sure i'm all that crazy about it It seemed to do better in my 20g low tech tank. I have 216w over my 55g tank. a fluval 404, and a eheim 2215, i dose dry ferts using EI and pressurized CO2. the bottoms of the stems seem to start to die off the needle like leaves start to turn black and the tops are healthy green and turning to orangeish red. but i hate the bottom parts of the stems. I think i will give this plant a lil more time in the tank maybe move it to an area with more light. right now it is in a some what shaded area of the tank.

As the top parts get bushy, they block light from the lower portions of the stems so that's why it happens. Happens to me too...move it out of the shade.

I have been trying this plant for years..... no luck. I've had it in all my tanks and all different light/fert/co2 environments. I have not tried softwater. My water here is pretty hard. I might try a RO unit sometime in the future. But until then I guess I will keep on trying.

My R. Walichii does the same thing as the OP..... Bummer.

Wallichii does best with good lighting, in an uncrowded area where the water can flow around the entire stem.

If you want to grow this plant in a crowded back corner of the tank, you need to absolutely master your CO2.

I tried it several times with no luck. When I built my 26 bow a couple of months ago I got most of the plants off the swap and shop. One of the sellers had R Wallichii and I went ahead and ordered it. I think it is a beautiful plant! They arrived in great shape with great color. Wasn't a day or two before the color had faded but the plants did well. About 4 or 5 weeks later the red has returnd and they look beautiful in the tank.

If the tops are looking good and the bottoms are an issue.........I would try several things. As suggested put them in a place where they aren't shaded by other plants. Give them a little space between each stem so they don't shade themselves. Also when you trim, pull up cut the bottom off and replant the top.

I think I have good lighting I just think that the wood is shading it a lil too much. Like I said the plant did much better in my 20g Low tech tank I am going to move it to the fron left corner and see what happens. how fast does this plant grow for everyone else?

Grows pretty fast for me, as fast as other rotalas. I only have 2wpg over my 55 and the bottoms stay healthy.. Though issue for me is that the plant seems to be a mulm magnet.

So not really a fast grower like hygro or L. repens, seems like this L. sessorflora is growing quit fast
