Toss the fake background. painting the back will also hide the really really bad scratchs you have all over it...
Add some continuity... white-ish sand w/ random black pebbles does not natural. Nor does the mix of big worn driftwood with random sticks.
Figure your focal point. wait for plants to grow, or add more.
As far as trimming, first trim should be when those plants hit the waterline.
