Hello Everyone,

It's new tank time! Stoked to upgrade from my 12g, a custom built 20g (30x12x12in)

Here's the short lived 12g (tore it down after 2.5 months)

Starting setup:

- Aquaclear 20 filter
- X Brand internal powerhead/filter
- Finnex fugeray 20" LED
- Nutrafin co2 natural plant system
- Light & co2 timer

Added/changed:

- Finnex fugeray planted+ 30" LED

Setting it up on March 29, 2014

Substrate got here, first time using fluorite!

Substrate in, flooded & hardscape testing:

Plants in, I moved the old filter from the 12g, so fish in (a few guppies) to keep the filter bacteria alive:

Starting week 2, params look great (0 ammonia, 0 nitrite, 20ppm nitrate) - the filter from my 12g doing the trick.

Already seeing some growth:

Bit of a long update but a lot happened over the last 2 weeks.

After getting the finnex planted+, I kept my lighting period and everything the same. Big mistake on a new tank. Algae started growing everywhere (hair and green spot mostly):

Decided to step up the game against algae, got some glossostigma, more dhg and a couple of small blyxa japonicas:

Planting Glosso:

Planting DHG:

End result:

More plants didn't slow down algae as I expected so had to step up my game.

Installed a second DIY bottle for more & consistent co2:

resulted in almost yellow drop checker which made me happy and the plants:

My otto's are getting fat

Along with Co2 I cut the photoperiod by 2 hours (now 6-7 in total), cut feeding to once a day (resulted in lower nitrates) and went with the one-two punch algae treatment.

Still too early to see results but crossing fingers I'll win this fight.

Oh and currently waiting for an eheim ecco pro canister I ordered from amazon, I feel lack of proper filtration is causing ammonia spikes.
The light from the planted+ made your tank look amazing! Very nice!
Nice custom made tank! Where'd you get it made?

According to my 3 year old niece that first picture of the driftwood in the tank by itself looks like a dinosaur. I have to agree.
Tank looks great...where is the algae exactly?

I'm going with the Loch Ness monster.

Hah! Dinosaur and loch ness monster where my thoughts as well, still have it around but decided not to use it (for now) :)

Didn't take any algae pics, it was not horrible but definitely noticeable. Already seeing improvements from the treatment today. Also plants are looking better with a shorter time period.

There's a local LFS where you give them the specs and they will make it for you within 24-48 hours.

Week 4 update - rescape!

Found some driftwood I liked and went for a rescape, removed rocks in place for some dark wood for more contrast. Here's the layout:

End result:

now to wait until it grows in!

Oh and the one-two punch algae treatment was a huge success. Almost all traces of algae gone now!

Week 7 update

A lot has happened in the last few weeks, biggest change was swapping out the HOB and internal filter to a Eheim Ecco Pro cannister (loving it!), switched to an inline diffuser and added a bigger DIY co2 bottle. Everything growing in nicely, but I'm getting the itch for a rescape.

Pics after yesterday's trim:

Co2 being diffused:

Happy dropchecker:

You must have to trim that cobomba what, hourly? :hihi: I have to trim mine weekly at least and I don't have near the light you do
