So I thought I'd try out the idea of wabi-kusa and I didn't really like how the clay made the water look so dirty so instead I purchased a chip n dip glass bowl at Walmart and some aquatic plants and used only ADA amazonia substrate:

And came up with this sad little attempt:

Then I added more plants I collected from a stream (got carried away and used a pyrex bowl to use up the rest of this extra creeping moss/plant I collected):

And finally I added 2 fancy guppies:

The fish seem to be doing well and the plants are all growing new leaves which makes me happy but it all looks very messy and I'm wondering if adding a light colored substrate like sand will help...the only problem is, I don't know how that will affect my plant growth or the fish. Any ideas would be much appreciated.

This looks good. I like the way there isn't any substrate on the outside ring (where the chips sit) Makes it look really nice

I think the sand would look good.
